Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about what the NIE is, how it's processed, and what to expect from working with us.

The basics

About the NIE number

What is the NIE number?

It's the Foreigner Identification Number: a unique ID you need in Spain for almost any formal process, such as working, buying property, or opening a bank account.

Is the NIE number mandatory?

Yes. If you're going to live, work, invest or study in Spain, the law requires you to have an NIE number.

What's the difference between the NIE and residency?

The NIE is just a tax and administrative identification number. It does not grant you the right to reside in Spain. If you also want to reside legally, you need to apply for residency separately.

Does the NIE expire?

No. The number itself is valid for life. What can expire is the paper certificate that proves it, depending on your situation.

The process

How it works with us

Do I have to travel to Spain to apply?

Not necessarily. With the remote path, we handle everything with a notarised power of attorney: you sign from your own country and we attend the appointment on your behalf. If you prefer, we also offer the in-Spain path, where you attend in person at an appointment we prepare for you.

How long does the process take?

On average, between 3 and 6 weeks from the notarisation of the power of attorney (or from when we book your appointment, on the in-Spain path). The exact timeframe depends on appointment availability with the Policía Nacional in each province; we'll let you know as soon as we have a date.

What is the power of attorney and why do I need it?

It's the legal document that authorises us to act on your behalf before the Spanish authorities. It's only needed for the remote path, and it's included in that path's price.

What happens if there's an issue with my application?

We review your file before submitting it to minimise that risk. If an issue does come up, we let you know immediately and rebook the appointment at no extra cost in most cases.

How do I receive my NIE at the end?

By email, as a PDF with the scanned official certificate. On the in-Spain path, you'll also receive it in person at the appointment.

Pricing and transparency

About the cost of the service

How much does each path cost?

The remote path costs 250 € + IGIC, all-inclusive (power of attorney included). The in-Spain path costs 150 € + IGIC, also all-inclusive. No hidden fees, no surprises halfway through.

Why are your prices lower than other agencies?

We operate from the Canary Islands, where IGIC (Canary Islands General Indirect Tax) applies at 7%, instead of the 21% VAT charged on the Spanish mainland. We pass that difference directly on to the final price you pay.

When do I have to pay?

You pay when confirming your application, before we start processing it. The price you see on the page is the final price: no surprise extra costs afterwards.

Do you offer discounts for families or groups?

Yes, if you need to apply for the NIE for several family members at once, write to us and we'll put together a joint quote for you.
